Marine Park Clay Courts Open To Public

(Interview with manager and instructor of Red Bank Clay Courts, Rich Nicoletti)

Red Bank- "Ask the opinion of just about anyone who plays tennis at the four municipal clay courts at the foot of Marine Park overlooking the Navesink River," said Rich Nicoletti, "and they'll tell you, the Red Bank Tennis Courts are the best kept secret in Monmouth County."

Mr. Nicoletti is the resident pro who serves as supervisor, tennis instructor and maintenance man.

"People who have never played on clay don't know what they are missing," Mr. Nicoletti said, adding that the court surface is "very forgiving, allowing even those who are prone to injure a chance to enjoy the game without suffering.

He explained that many people who visit Marine Park assume that the tennis courts are privately owned, or are part of the nearby Monmouth Boat Club. But the facility, which is part of the borough's Green Acres property, "welcomes anyone who can swing a racquet."

Tennis has thrived in Marine Park since 1930, he noted.

The clay courts, which can be reserved 24 hours prior to play, are open from the middle of May until the end of October. Court fees, whether paid on a seasonal or daily basis, are "reasonably priced," said Mr. Nicoletti.

Mixed doubles parties, open to anyone, are conducted from 4 p.m. until dark every other Saturday throughout the season. "You don't even need to bring a partner. If you don't have a friend who play tennis, let me know," Mr. Nicoletti said, adding that he will find "plenty of people who will play with you."

For information, contact Rich Nicoletti at the tennis courts (530-2737, recorded message).
